The natural aging process may have created changes/losses during your loved one’s life.

One practice I find helpful is to engage with family members to understand through their eyes who their loved one has been over the time of his or her life. I strive to recognize and honor that personal history and meet whatever challenges and specific needs may arise.

Caregiving and helping with ordinary tasks becomes an opportunity to connect with your loved one and to find the qualities that can still be accentuated in a positive way.

When engaging in conversation about some positive life experiences and asking follow-up questions to learn of your loved one’s interests and current concerns, they show confidence and it becomes a very uplifting experience. These are just a few ways I can help your loved one cope with the aging process.
